Layered Paper Pastel Technique

My work is a process of drawing in layers.
The first layer is roughly drawn (no details added at this time just large blocks of color) on 100% cotton rag paper. Architectural vellum, a translucent stiff paper (originally used to produce blue prints) is soaked in a rice or wheat starch over night. The wet vellum is then laid on top of the image. The wet starchy adhesive soaks into the paper causing the chalk image to blur and run. As it dries, the wet cotton papers shrink. This causes the cracks and wrinkles in the image. After it has dried I go back in with pastel and begin bringing in detail. Often, it is the texture created by the layers that determine how the detail will develop. Although most works have only two to 3 layers some have as many as 5.
